Alarmed by the deterioration of the sacred word of the Supreme Buddha, the leading monks who had suffered for long, decided that they should hold a Council to commit the Buddha-word to writing – to prevent its decay. They were determined, as the last generation who had committed the sacred word of the Buddha to memory, not to allow such a situation like this to arise ever again. These monks assembled under Royal Patronage to fulfill this unprecedented spiritual task of writing down the 84,000-part Dispensation of the Buddha. All these areas of the Buddha Word were written down. At the end of this holy effort, the collection of those sacred Ola Leaf Books, stood nine elephants high. In the whole of human history, this was the first time, that an oral tradition of this magnitude which had existed over long centuries, came to be recorded in writing. From that day on, Sri Lanka became the sacred hub from which the written tripitaka (the three parts of the Buddha Word), radiated all over the world. And this sacred process still continues. |
